WHAT
is Meals On Wheels?
Private, nonprofit organization which delivers hot, nutritious meals
to the homebound elderly and severely disabled who are unable to
prepare adequate meals for themselves. Meals On Wheels helps the
elderly remain in their own homes under the watchful eyes of volunteers
who care.
WHO
deliver the Meals?
Caring volunteers use their own vehicles and gasoline to deliver
the meals.
WHO
is eligible?
To be eligible for Meals On Wheels, a person must -
Be homebound
Be unable to prepare well-balanced meals
Not have anyone in the household who is able to prepare meals
HOW
does someone apply?
Anyone may recommend a person to be considered for receiving Meals
On Wheels by simply calling the office at 374-1521. Most referrals
come from family members, hospitals, home health agencies, friends,
or the applicants themselves. After basic information is obtained
over the phone, a volunteer interviewer will set up an appointment
with the applicant for a home visit. The Meals On Wheels office
will contact the eligible applicant with a start date for service
when there is an opening on a volunteer route in his/her neighborhood.

WHAT
kind of Meals are served?
Meals are purchased from BSA and Northwest Texas Hospitals and consist
of a meat, two vegetables, salad, dessert, bread, and milk. Special
diets are offered - general, diabetic, healthy heart, mechanically
soft, and pureed.
WHAT
do the Meals cost?
Recipients pay the raw food cost of $2.25 per meal on a monthly
basis. If financially unable to pay $2.25, the applicant is asked
to provide financial information for Meals On Wheels to determine
the fee.
WHO
funds Meals On Wheels?
The funding for Meals On Wheels of Amarillo is provided by private
contributions, civic organizations, foundations, local churches,
memorials, client participation, and fundraisers. Contributions
are tax deductible and are applied toward operational expenses.
Meals On Wheels of Amarillo is NOT a United Way Agency and has never
received federal or state funding
HOW
did Meals On Wheels of Amarillo start?
Meals On Wheels of Amarillo was organized by twelve local churches
in 1971 with 25 volunteers and service for 14 elderly people. Today
the program feeds 300 elderly recipients through the support of
400 volunteers.
