Meals on Wheels

Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization! We absolutely could not survive without our caring volunteers.

What will I be doing?

Volunteers pick up the meals from either BSA or Northwest Texas Hospital. They drive their own cars and use their own gas to deliver the meals. Most routes have 7-9 stops.

Many times, you will be the only person the client may see that day. A friendly smile, hot nutritious meal, and critical safety check five days a week are priceless to the homebound elderly in our community that depend on Meals on Wheels volunteers.

How much time do I need to commit?

The average delivery time is about one hour. Meals are ready to be picked up starting at 10:30 am and no later than 11:15 am from BSA or Northwest Texas Hospitals.

How do I know where to go to deliver meals?

Detailed route sheets with turn by turn directions are provided to each client’s home. Route sheets list the clients name, address, type of meal, and detailed directions.

What kind of training will I receive?

The Meals on Wheels office will set up a training with a volunteer for you to ride along with them on a route. They will show you where to pick up the meals at the hospital, make sure you are comfortable reading the route sheet, and answer any other questions.

Volunteers also provide a critical safety check for our seniors. If something doesn’t seem right, volunteers call the Meals on Wheels office and emergency contacts are alerted to check on the client.

Three types of volunteers needed:
1.       Permanent Driver – volunteer has a set route they deliver every week
2.       Substitute Driver – volunteer is on a call list available when permanent drivers are not able to deliver
3.       Snow Driver – volunteer is called after snow or ice storms to deliver when permanent drivers are not able to deliver
Meals on Wheels is the perfect volunteer opportunity for companies, clubs, churches and even high school students.

Please call the Meals on Wheels office if you would like a presentation to your club or organization on how you can help.
